MINI COOPER BUYING GUIDE
The Cooper trim level is MINI’s hottest, available across its range. Here’s all you want to know to assist you choose your own.
The MINI Cooper is a name steeped in history, associated with Monte Carlo Rally victories and generations of performance spin-offs.
Today, the name can be found round the MINI range, and it means as far as ever in terms of performance and driver enjoyment.
Here is our buyers guide to all the MINI Cooper models.
MINI Cooper 3-door
The first and still the most fun, the 3-dr Cooper recalls the classic Cooper versions of old, with streamlined, cheeky styling and proceed kart-like handling.
If practicality isn’t the most crucial factor for you, there is no other little car that is quite as much fun. The entry-level Cooper has a three-cylinder 1.5-litre turbocharged engine, although the S includes a 2.0-litre four-pot. The S is stronger (189bhp vs 134bhp) but the normal Cooper is still a complete joy to drive, with a characterful engine note.
The petrol is not as fast, but is extremely frugal, offering up to 75mpg.
There is also the range-topping John Cooper Works edition, including track features and identifying performance styling add-ons. It’s a fabulous machine and it truly looks the part.
MINI Cooper 5-door
The Cooper 5-door hatch uses a lengthened version of this 3-dr platform, with an extra set of doorways and quite a fair amount of rear legroom.
The boot is 30 per cent bigger than that of the three-door, while the trim levels are otherwise exactly the same. It is a more sensible alternative to the classic 3-door version, but still keeps a lot of its cheeky charm and character.
MINI Cooper Countryman
With its elevated ride height, four-wheel-drive and chunky styling, the Cooper Countryman is the car you will need for the most extreme of MINI experiences.
Nevertheless despite its crossover qualifications, the Countryman retains a level of driving pleasure that few other tiny SUVs may muster, thanks to MINI’s superb chassis engineering. It’s still a complete delight to drive, using a choice of three models — the normal Cooper and the more powerful Cooper S, that utilize the very same motors as the Mini hatch. Or for the full effect, there’s a John Cooper Works version, which comes with additional styling attributes and special alloys.
MINI Cooper Convertible
The ragtop MINI is a fun-filled alternative into the 3-door, which functions best in three-cylinder type, as with the roof down you get to actually appreciate its characterful engine note.
MINI Cooper Clubman
The Clubman is the ideal MINI if you need a bit more extra space, above and beyond the five-door hatch but using a more car-like appearance compared to crossover Countryman.
It has a generous loading bay, and also is available in three trim levels — the 134bhp three-cylinder Cooper, the 150bhp diesel Cooper D along with the 189bhp John Cooper Works.
