The MINI Cooper is a name steeped in history, related to Monte Carlo Rally successes and generations of operation spin-offs.
Today, the name can be found round the MINI range, and it means as far as ever in terms of performance and driver enjoyment.
Here’s our buyers guide to each of the MINI Cooper models.
MINI Cooper 3-door
The first and still the most fun, the 3-dr Cooper recalls the classic Cooper models of old, with compact, cheeky styling and go kart-like handling.
If practicality isn’t the most crucial factor for you, there’s no additional little car that is quite as much pleasure. Cooper, Cooper S and Cooper D. The entry-level Cooper has a three-cylinder 1.5-litre turbocharged engine, although the S includes a 2.0-litre four-pot. The S is more powerful (189bhp vs 134bhp) however, the normal Cooper is still a complete pleasure to drive, with a characterful engine note.
The diesel isn’t as fast, but is very frugal, offering around 75mpg.
There is also the range-topping John Cooper Works edition, including monitor features and identifying performance styling add-ons. It is a fabulous machine and it truly looks the part.
MINI Cooper 5-door
The Cooper 5-door hatch uses a lengthened version of the 3-dr platform, with an extra set of doorways and quite a decent amount of rear legroom.
The boot is 30 per cent bigger than that of the three-door, while the trim levels are otherwise the same. It’s a more sensible alternative to the traditional 3-door version, but still keeps a lot of its understated charm and personality.
MINI Cooper Countryman
With its elevated ride height, four-wheel-drive and chunky styling, the Cooper Countryman is the car you will need for the most extreme of MINI adventures.
Yet despite its crossover credentials, the Countryman retains a degree of driving enjoyment that few other small SUVs can muster, due to MINI’s superb chassis engineering. It is still an absolute delight to drive, using a choice of three versions — the standard Cooper and the more powerful Cooper S, that use the very same engines as the Mini hatch. Or for the entire effect, there is a John Cooper Works version, which includes additional styling features and unique alloys.
MINI Cooper Convertible
The ragtop MINI is a fun-filled alternate into the 3-door, which functions best in three-cylinder form, much like the roof down you get to really appreciate its characterful engine note.
MINI Cooper Clubman
The Clubman is the perfect MINI should you need a little more extra room, above and outside the five-door hatch but using a more car-like look compared to crossover Countryman.
It’s a generous loading bay, and is offered in three trim levels — the 134bhp three-cylinder Cooper, the 150bhp diesel Cooper D and also the 189bhp John Cooper Works.
